Acne can be a mild problem that gets easily eliminated by topical solutions you can buy at any pharmacy. But it can also be a problem that will require you to address a dermatologist and undergo a serious treatment. In most cases moderate and severe forms of acne will make the doctor prescribe you with an antibiotic treatment either in the form of pills or topical cremes. In some cases such a treatment will actually help, while in other circumstances the problem can get even worse. So what’s the catch with antibiotic acne treatment, what are its main drawbacks and is there any effective alternative to it? Let’s answer these questions.

First of all, we’ll have to look into the actual causes behind acne breakouts in order to understand why antibiotics are used for treating this condition. The usual mechanism of acne formation involves several factors. There’s a lot of different bacteria dwelling in skin pores, usually beneficial and helping fight alien bacteria that can cause irritation or infections. The amount of these bacteria is usually stable. However, when there’s an abundance of oil in the skin, which is very favorable for bacterial development, the amount of beneficial bacteria increases and that causes inflammation. This is what we see as acne and that’s why it is usually associated with bacterial infections. So the obvious solution would be to use a drug that cuts down the amount of bacteria and prevents inflammation. That’s exactly what doctors do when prescribing antibiotics to their patients.

There’s one problem with antibiotics though. Because they target nearly all bacteria in the skin this means that most beneficial bacteria are also eliminated. This creates the risk of alien bacterial infection because the usual bacteria protecting your skin from outside agents are eliminated by the treatment. And you may end up having more serious problems. Besides, after some time the amount of own bacteria can exceed again the normal amount if there are favorable conditions for bacterial development (increased oil production) and you will have to take antibiotics again. Which is not very good for your health in general because antibiotics seriously affect the liver and can also cause dysbiosis in many parts of the body, which can also be a serious health problem.

A really effective alternative to antibiotic acne treatment is using Accutane. This drug is regarded as the most effective solution for acne but since it is very potent it is only meant to be used under strict doctor supervision. Accutane has a different approach to treating acne and addresses the actual problem behind acne formation – excessive oil production in the skin. If the amount of oil is normalized there will be less bacteria and no irritation in the skin, which will stop acne breakouts. That’s exactly why Accutane is so effective for treating acne and doesn’t seriously affect any other aspects of skin health. Speak to your doctor about using Accutane in order to make sure that this drug will work for you.

There are countless professions in the field of medicine, and of course some are very well-known: doctors, surgeons, nurses and anesthesiologists. But if you’re interested in finding a career in medicine that’s a little more obscure, below are some examples you just might want to consider.

Medicine relies not only on those who take care of patients, but also on those people who work in laboratories doing research, investigating newly-discovered microbes and finding new forms of medicines to treat these threats. If you work as a lab technician you might be trying out new forms of antibiotics on bacteria that are resistant to old antibiotics, or you might be scrutinizing the genome to discover ways to slow the human aging process and make the body stronger and better able to fight off threats. There are even sleep researchers whose job it is to examine people’s brain patterns while they sleep; some of them can even spend all day counting the number of times people yawn!

An anesthesiologist is a person who administers anesthesia to people about to undergo surgical procedures. Anesthesiologists are also responsible for making sure that your vital signs remain healthy the whole time you’re knocked out. And it’s the anesthesiologist who leads the countdown with you (“10, 9, 8…”); those numbers are usually the last things a person hears before he or she goes under.

A medical equipment preparer is the professional who gets all of the instruments and other materials ready for a surgery. He or she will find all of this equipment, sterilize everything that needs to be sterilized, and lay it all out properly so that everything is ready to go. (You didn’t think that surgeons did these things themselves, did you?)

A medical transcriptionist is kind of like the court reporter of the hospital. He or she will write down all of a doctor’s notes and other dictations, and use them to create a patient’s medical record. Much of this work can be done at home online-in fact, there’s a big push currently to try to get all medical records posted online, to replace cumbersome old techniques of filing away patient records.

Home health aides are people who work under the supervision of a nurse, doctor, or other rehabilitation specialist. They travel to patients’ homes to make sure that the patient is performing his or her proper exercises, and they monitor progress, medication intake, as well as any problems or pain that a patient might be experiencing. This can be very rewarding work as you get to help patients one-on-one, and really help them along on the road to recovery. It’s also fun because you’re not cooped up in the same office all day long.

As technology develops, look for new medical careers to be created. The fields of tele-rehabilitation (rehab over the Internet), art and music therapy and DNA treatment are all burgeoning fields that promise to yield exciting new professions.

There is a wonderful idiom, several times used as the title to a movie and offering the comparative warning, “It shouldn’t happen to a dog.” It refers to some proposed act or omission that is so unpleasant to humans, it should not even be wished on a dog (being a mere animal, it might be expected to bear most things, but not this). Human culture has grown up with animals a part of our lives. Whether as pets, living as one of the family in our own homes, or as working beasts, we value them for “who” they are and what they can do for us. This means treating them in much the same way as humans. If they get sick, we give them our medications. Sometimes, they retaliate by acting as incubators to encourage viruses to mutate and, as with “swine” or “bird” flu, return the favor by passing us infections to which we have no resistance. But, in general, we worry about them. Even the animals we propose to eat are stuffed full of antibiotics to keep them fit and healthy. So, keeping this real, there are many protections we have put in place for our animals. The most carefully monitored rules affect horses. These powerful animals have become a key part of the gambling industry, running in races for our excitement and jumping fences for our admiration.

As with most sports, the fear is that horses dosed with stimulants and other drugs might run faster and/or jump higher. Think Barry Bonds and the debate about the use of steroids in Major League Baseball for an understanding of the passion in the world of racing and equestrian sports. At the top of the sport, the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) carried out detailed research in the early part of this century and concluded it was unsafe to allow horses to compete if they were relying on painkillers. In 2004, the Federation moved toward a zero-tolerance policy. This was approved by the Veterinary Committee and representatives of the different national bodies. The risk of seriously injuring the horses was too great and this protective care was strongly endorsed by horse-lovers around the world. Horses should only be used when they are completely fit. It’s therefore somewhat surprising to see the FEI change the policy to allow the use of a range of painkillers. Indeed, the decision has provoked outrage.

Yet, when it comes to humans, we routinely buy tramadol, dose ourselves and then carry on with sometimes energetic activities. The problem is the same as with horses. With pain suppressed, we can attempt to move normally and aggravate the existing injuries. As with everything, a balance has to be struck. Pain is inconvenient most of the time but nevertheless a useful warning when we might be overexerting ourselves. When we are recovering from injuries or learning to live within new physical limits, using tramadol is reasonable in the first stages of regaining mobility. But, in the long term, it’s better to recover muscle tone and build stamina without the help of drugs. That way, we learn coping strategies and need only use a painkiller when the pain flares up again. We are entitled to the same protection as horses.

Any pregnant woman, who is experiencing vaginal bleeding or watery discharge during pregnancy, should be careful. When you’re pregnant, it is not only important to watch your developing changes, but abnormal symptoms, too. Women need to take not of any changes their experiencing, particularly vaginal bleeding or a watery discharge. Both of these can signal serious occurrences in your pregnancy. Depending on the level of each, there may be nothing to worry about. But in some women vaginal bleeding and watery discharge can be a problem. These need to be addressed cautiously, no matter what they result in.

Vaginal bleeding often causes pregnant women a lot of alarm. The first thought in this type of scenario, is that of a miscarriage. Miscarriage, however, is not the only reason behind vaginal bleeding in pregnant women. For some women, the reason may be quite simple. The taking of certain medications, can produce certain levels of bleeding from the vagina.

Medications, like antibiotics, have been known to cause spotting or bleeding. This is one reason why medicine usage habits during pregnancy is important. In these situations, women are dealing with some other condition or ailment, and are treating its symptoms. Sharing, this type of information, with your personal physician is a way to gage its safety, especially while expecting.

Some women will experience bleeding from the vaginal area, because they have illnesses they’re unaware of. In these cases, uterine fibroid tumors, or even cancer, can be to the culprit. This again is why communication with a physician is paramount. Doctors can look at seemingly unrelated symptoms, and occurrences and figure out what your condition may be. It may even be necessary to run tests for a proper diagnosis.

Women normally have a watery discharge, also called leukorrhea. It is usually odorless, or has only a mild odor. This discharge often looks to be milky. Pregnant women traditionally see an increase of normal discharge increases. One reason for this is the presence of more estrogen in the body. It is also encouraged by more blood flow in the entire vaginal area.

This discharge secrets from the cervix and vagina, and is often harmless to pregnant women. It is noteworthy to take caution, if at anytime mucous is present with this discharge. Mucous can signal that the mucous lining or mucous plug blocking the cervix is thinning. This typically happens only when labor is eminent.

If this type of discharge occurs during early pregnancy, this is more of a concern. For a woman nearing her due date, this discharge is probably normal. But for a woman far from the time of delivery, premature labor may have been triggered. If this is the case, seeking medical attention is paramount.

Women who are not yet 37 weeks pregnant, and are, seeing a lot of mucous, in their discharge needs to tell their doctor. This could be a timely way of averting problems with the rest of pregnancy. It is also a good means of protecting your baby’s health, and maybe even its life.
