You know the feeling you get when you just have the urge to snack. It’s almost always nothing to do with whether or not you’re actually hungry. Instead, there’s a trigger that strikes straight at our primitive roots that says “snack now!”

Whether it’s the smell of fresh bread, cunningly wafted around the store by supermarkets to entice us or the notion of a freshly brewed cup of coffee (again, a nose grabber) or someone cooking bacon in what seems to be a 5 mile radius.

Those are the smell (or olfactory) factors in snacking.

But there are other triggers that cause us to snack between meals.

Sometimes it’s habit: the tea trolley that used to come round at work had a routine and that sticks with you even if the trolley and the person wheeling it are long gone. Your stomach just says “it’s time for elevenses” or whatever and you get the urge to snack, regardless of whether there’s any need to digest more food.

Another snacking habit a lot of people get into is eating whilst watching television or a movie. In fact, cinemas encourage this with their oversized tubs of popcorn, plates of nachos dripping with melted cheese and industrial size soft drinks. So we take that idea home with us and – before you know it – you’re snacking whilst watching the television and the family sized packet of Doritos served one person – you.

None of which answers the question of whether snacking between meals is good or bad.

Snacks in moderation are almost certainly OK. Different doctors will give you different answers – some will say stick to three square meals a day, others will say that snacking or grazing is fine. Of course, they’ll almost all quietly add in the phrase “as part of a calorie controlled diet” just to keep themselves off any possible hook.

If the snack you’re about to eat is there because you’re genuinely hungry then no-one should be able to argue with that.

If it’s there as comfort food then maybe there’s a place for it as well, so long as you don’t devour half the store in the process of attending to your snacking need.

So on the answer to the question “is snacking between meals good or bad?” I’m going to sit on the fence.

Deep down you’ll know the answer for you. Your bathroom scales will likely know as well but you’ve probably sworn them to secrecy.

And whether or not you do anything to reduce your snacking is down to you as well – me nagging won’t help and could even make it worse!

With your high school graduation coming up, everyone should make sure to order a high school gowns as some may forget. You may find yourself experiencing more and more periods of depression. Change can cause depression to occur more often and the change from high school student to high school graduate is a pretty big one.

Make sure that you take the time for yourself that you need to. Someone who suffers from depression, whether you are on medication or not, can have a hard time dealing with such life changing events such as your high school graduation. While I am not saying, by any means, that you will have bouts of depression when it comes to leaving high school, as one who suffers from depression myself, I know that it was a hard time to deal with. I know that I had problems with quite a bit of depression when it came to leaving high school and moving on to the big bad world outside.

Take time to yourself and do things that will help to stave off the depression. If you have hobbies that you particularly enjoy, then you can do those more often to help with your depression. While it may not keep your depression away entirely, it may help to keep it at bay. If you enjoy painting, then by all means, spend more time painting and the same goes for things like drawing or writing.

I know that with my love of writing, it has helped me to really work through a lot of my issues when it came to my own high school graduation gowns. Before I started to write about how I was feeling, I was having days and even weeks of really bad depression that I had to really fight to get out of bed and continue to function. Once I started writing nightly, about anything and everything, it really helped. I would write about little things, like the squirrel I saw on the way to school that morning, or how hot one of the guys in my math class was.

While it is not a cure all and will not keep you depression free, it may help to keep things at bay and even get you into a habit and even help to develop your talent for your hobby. By practicing anything you will get better at it and when you enjoy it, it will really help to make you want to practice it.

Take, for example, the fact that before my high school graduation gowns, I started to write and keep a daily journal. I enjoyed it and wanted to do it more, so I started to write about everything I could. I would write poems and short stories. I would write about everything keeping a daily journal. It got me to the point that I wanted to vary my writing, so I get a thesaurus to help me expand my vocabulary. Not, not only do I write for a living, but I also have wide vocabulary that I can use in my writing and something like that doesn’t really disappear like some talents can.

You must be living in a dream world if you are one of the few people left on the planet who think that smoking is not that bad for your health. It has been proven to be one of the leading causes of emphysema and many other breathing disorders among those who smoke. Millions of people have already stopped this terribly hazardous habit and millions of others are trying to quit or at the very least thinking about it. After you have been addicted to smoking for years or maybe even less time, it can be extremely difficult to quit for some.

Another consequence that smokers have to bear other than what they are doing to their own bodies, is what they might be doing to other people as well. There has been a huge uproar among non smokers about the detrimental side affects that they have to be exposed to because of those who smoke. They believe that it is unfair for smokers to be allowed to smoke anywhere and anytime they want to and they are exactly right.

When a person chooses to smoke, that is their own affair and they have the right to kill themselves any way they want to more or less, but that does not mean that they have a right to expose others to the smoke they create and exhale. It is almost akin to saying if I want to urinate in the spot you are standing in, I have a right to. That would just be crazy and no one could deny it. No one, not even smokers would want to stand next to you if you wanted to urinate or worse in public because it would be unhealthy. Smoking is a similar unnecessary thing.

We all have rights, but others have the right to not be affected by your rights. Yes, it can be a very complicated and controversial subject when it comes to who has the right to what, but we have to use a little common sense. If a smoker has a baby or child, they would not want people with the flu to come up and cough and sneeze all over that child on purpose. People who do not smoke themselves or have children, also do not want themselves or their children to be exposed to your cigarette. This is common sense. You have a right to smoke, just not anywhere you like, any time you want.
