Muscle relaxant drugs usually come with doctor’s prescription and are employed for relieving muscle spasm and muscular pain. These symptoms usually occur as signs of other conditions such as arthritis, chronic diseases or can be the aftermath of injuries. Muscle pain and spasms can also be caused by the over-use of certain muscles like in case of over-exercising by athletes. Certain muscle relaxant drugs are very powerful and have addictive properties, that’s why they are mostly issues with a prescription and are controlled by the FDA. Like with any other prescription drugs there may be side effects occurring with the use of muscle relaxants, however they are not as common as with some other types of drugs, especially painkillers.

Muscle relaxants, as you may guess from the name, work by relaxing the muscles and relieving the pain associated with constant tension of different muscle groups. They are quite often prescribed for treating and relieving such degenerative conditions as arthritis or direct muscle injury. However, most doctors prescribe these drugs in conjunction with physical therapy in order to assure prompt treatment. The most commonly prescribed muscle relaxant drugs include carisoprodol, diazepam and cyclobenzaprine.

Types of muscle relaxant drugs

We have to start with a slight problem of definition. The practice of massage varies significantly between different cultures. In some countries, it is not considered a part of medicine but serves a more social purpose, designed to improve mood and help people relax. In other countries, massage is fully integrated into the healthcare service as one of the many possible processes of physical therapy. In the US, massage would be considered a complementary or alternative medical treatment, i.e. it serves as a back-up to conventional medicine. Thus, when combined with other treatments, massage therapy helps to improve the mobility of joints, reduce swelling, ease muscle spasms and reduce pain. In accepting massage, the US medical profession is recognizing patients can get the best of both worlds: the healing powers of Western science and the more spiritual and relaxing powers of Eastern wellness. Massage is therefore increasingly made available to treat both physical conditions causing neck and back pain, nerve pain, etc., and also mental disorders such as anxiety, stress-related insomnia, etc.

In accepting massage in its hospitals, the US healthcare service is opening itself to the increasing body of scientific evidence showing massage as an effective treatment. Until a few years ago, the medical profession resisted holding clinical trials to test “alternative” remedies. Such studies as existed in other countries were treated with some contempt. Massage was nothing more that an indulgence in high-priced spas. Now the manipulation of the soft tissues by a skilled therapist is acknowledged to reduce physical pain, relieve stress and bring down blood pressure. The methods differ depending on the purpose of the treatment. In general, the therapist will press, manipulate and rub the relevant parts of the body. Most techniques rely on the use of the hands and fingers, but others use the forearm, elbow and, in a few cases, the feet. The pressure may be light and involve gentle stroking. Or it can involve the use of significant pressure to knead and reach down to deep layers of muscle.

If you are experiencing muscle spasms, i.e. an involuntary contraction like cramp that persists, the combination of massage therapy and the use of a muscle relaxant like skelaxin has been found particularly effective. This most commonly occurs in the back, buttocks and legs. It may be from a physical cause such as a herniated disk or sciatica with pain radiating from the nerve. The manipulation of the disk can rapidly reduce pain and improve mobility. As the more acute symptoms are relieved, the drug will ease the problems in the muscles and reduce the risk of further spasms. In the case of sciatica, more aggressive treatment may be required in the use of steroids or, if the pain does not subside, surgery. But, in all this, the therapist will be able to guide you through the process of relieving the acute symptoms and planning a rehabilitation regime to reduce the risk of the problems recurring. At this time, it is most useful if your doctor and the therapist work as a team. That gives you the best advice on the use of prescription painkillers and drugs like skelaxin, while receiving comprehensive physical therapy. It delays treatment and can lead to misunderstandings if you constantly have to move between different hospital or clinic departments.

When it comes to stone massage the more recognized form involves heated stones but cold stone massage also offers numerous health benefits. Cold stone massage is a form of cryotherapy, the use of cold in medical treatments. Whereas hot stone massage is performed by heating basalt stones in water, cold stone massage is better performed with marble. Basalt is very effective in retaining heat because of its mineral and iron content. On the other hand, marble is valued in cold stone massage because it maintains a cool temperature very well. In both types of massages the stones help penetrate their temperature deeply into the muscles of the person receiving the massage. This results in a more fulfilling massage experience.

Cold stones are primarily effective as a decongestant on various parts of the body. They help relieve swelling in the circulatory system, and this benefit makes cold stone massage a potential treatment for several ailments. If you’re dealing with swelling from a sports injury or other kind, cold stones can help release the accumulation of blood in your tissues and muscles. The accumulation of blood in the body’s tissue is also the cause of dark circles under the eyes. Using small stones to rest on the eyes can help relieve the appearance of tired, puffy eyes.

Because cold stones help relieve the congestion of body fluids, they can also be used on the sinuses to help alleviate pressure due to frequent colds or allergies. In any case where cold stones are used on the face, it’s important that the therapist use a cloth under the stone to prevent discomfort from the stone being in direct contact with the skin. Other benefits of cold stone massage include decreasing muscle spasms, stimulation of the nervous system and increased tissue metabolism. It is also a treatment for abrasive applications such as waxing and micro-derm-abrasion. In general the effect of hot stone massage is to create a feeling of relaxation and soothing in the muscles.

A cold stone massage is very helpful for invigorating the tissues and blood vessels. It’s important to have an experienced therapist perform this treatment and to be mindful of how your body feels during and after the massage. Because the cold temperature of the stones numbs the skin, the person receiving the massage may not immediately notice if the pressure of the massage is beyond their comfort level. When done properly this form of massage is safe and effective. Although they have different techniques and purposes, both styles of stone massage have proven health and healing benefits. Stone massage uses the natural products of nature to offer you easy healing techniques for your mind and body.

If you have never experienced a cold stone massage, you are missing out! The health benefits alone are worth the price, let alone the state of relaxation that you will experience. Take a few hours on a Saturday, go down to the local day spa and book this treatment for yourself! It’s one move you won’t soon regret!
