It’s easy, if you lead a sedentary lifestyle and consume too much food, you are going to pile on the fat. This isn’t just common sense it’s science. However it doesn’t always work the same in reverse. Just because you exercise lots and eat little, doesn’t mean you’re going to be losing fat. You need to fuel your body with the right ingredients and burn off excess calories with the right amount of exercise.

Here’s what to do.

Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. You can eat as many as you want, a plate of vegetables has less calories than a line of chocolate.

Avoid butter and oil. Spread your toast lightly and opt for a teaspoon of olive oil rather then the other stuff. It’s better for your waistline and your heart.

Conquer sweet cravings by munching on seasonal fruit. You’ll save heaps of calories and supply your body with the nutrients and minerals it needs.

Fill up on lean protein. That means grill chicken breast or fillet steak, steamed fish, egg whites or tofu. A standard portion is the size of a deck of cards. Try to add one portion to at least two of your meals throughout the day.

Drink water. The body is made up of about 70% water. You need to drink it to stay hydrated and help your body and metabolism function properly. Listen to your body and don’t let it get thirsty because by then you are already dehydrated.

Take a walk. If you’re used to using the car to go to the corner store, stop right now, and hide your keys. This is a great opportunity to go for a stroll. Stop using your car for silly things when you can just as easily take a walk or get on the bike or even a pair of roller blades.

Exercise regularly. That doesn’t mean every single day. Three times per week for about forty five minutes is enough time to lose a few kilos and maintain a healthy weight. Remember you don’t want to over do it either. Find a balance that works for you. One week three days will be plenty, the next week you might feel like going for four or even five workouts. Go for it, your body will thank you.

Stick it out for life. Being healthy and fit is not a three month process that will stick for the rest of your life. To keep the fat off, you need to eat healthy and exercise regularly for the rest of your life. Therefore stop depriving yourself of foods you love and exercising like a maniac one week but forgetting about it the next because you can’t move a muscle. Instead focus on creating a plan for life.

The key to fat loss is everything in moderation. It’s OK to have a slice of cake every now and again, or the glass of wine to dinner. Having one or two days off from exercise is not going to make too much difference from time to time.
